Dreaming 發夢

During the political demonstrations that took place in Hong Kong in 2019, the term “dreaming” 發夢 (Faat moong) emerged as a code word that referred to the act of protest and any unauthorized gatherings. Disguised as a dream, the word was used by demonstrators to recount their shared experiences and also to incite political action: “I spent the night dreaming for a better tomorrow” a protestor might say. All political ideals are to some extent a dream, and language used during the protests oscillated between performative and abstraction. The neon light references the iconic skylines and streets of Hong Kong.
